please let me know if you want to skate in this event its not a contest but an informative session were people attending can learn how to use the park safely. LS parks and rec is willing to let us do a demo so people can learn some skate park etiquette. JohnF and my self are organizing the skate demonstration and will be meeting to plan the event I have spoken with a few of you already and have received a positive response. I will be at the LS park this Sun from 6pm to 7pm There is 8 riders so far and Dennis M is also suppose to ride so thats cool but we also need a few girl riders so ladies if you skate well lets all shred together.

Just some thoughts for your program. In EMS each year many services put on a demo for highschool kids that may want to go out and party before homecoming or prom. EMs stages a car wreck and use the kids class mates as actors in the wreck. The kids are often times transported by bus or called to the parking lot of the school and arrive to a mangeled car wreck where fire and ems are just showing up to work the wreck. Typically one kid is the driver and is alive and aressted the other freinds in his/her car are killed or severly injured. So if you took this project to the local ems and asked them to "work" a fake TBI call at the skatepark I would almost guess that they would do so. you could have a staged crash of 1 or 2 kids, ems shows up, places kid in C-Collar and backboards them and hauls them off.. perhaps later the kid could show back up at the park in a wheel chair to drive home the point that a brain injury can be that bad or perhaps the ems crew could call the TBI a death and body bag the (kid) person right in front of others. Just some thoughts that shock value often drives the point home and your local ems service can help you with this project. the other side is that you could be a safety freak and get the city to pass a rule making everyone at the park wear a helmet much like the city of nevada Mo does and if you don't have the helmet on even if not skating in the park then you get leaglly tresspassed from the park ( I still am not alowed in that park) until you do your community service time for that city. of course this is only fair if every other sport in town at the city park has to wear a bucket. can you imagine disc golfers with helmets on? These are some great ideas I'm getting from everyone, we seem to all be on the same page as to what we want to achieve at this event. I think this hits some what close to home for a few of us as we all have had a few close calls or bad falls that start making us think twice. As of right now I'm working with the city so we can have a moc demonstration as to how a medical professional handles a head or neck injury at the park. Joe I like your idea about the body bag the fire dept never mentioned anything near that shocking but I love the burning image. Just think what that poor mom's gonna think when she see's her son getting zipped up. Keep the ideas flowing.

Tom The flipside of my idea of having a burning image etched into the mids of those that see thise event is that the city could want to impose a helmet use at the park rule. I wear a helmet and wish others that don't would, but I don't wont to have my values forced onto them through rule or law, I guess what i am saying is that I hope that the negative helmet vibe is lifted from the kids, but i don't want to see them forced to wear a helmet.

Wow, now that is some shock value. If you go that route I hope there is some teaching as to what to do with someone who hits their head hard besides calling 911. The only thing I can think of adding to this is: Try and keep this simple and not very long. Kids attentions spans shut down very soon. Ok, disc golfers with helmets? Say it isn't so!!! Will I have to have a helmet just to go outside now? hehe

OK I WILL GET BACK ON POINT WITH THIS THERE WILL BE NO BODY BAGS, AND NO FAKE DEAD KIDS, I SCARED PARKS AND REC WITH IT AND THAT WAS ENOUGH I THINK. I LIKE THE SHOCK VALUE BUT I DONT WANT TO MAKE PEOPLE SICK. LOL THE TIME ALLOWANCE FOR A DEMO IS MAX 25 min. I HAVE THE PUBLIC SPEAKERS AT 3 MINUTES A PIECE AND FOOD AND MUSIC GETTING LINED UP. I AM STRUCTURING THE EVENT FOR A TEN YEAR OLD'S ATTENTION SPAN SO NOTHING GOES TO LONG OR SHORT. THERE ARE A FEW INDIVIDUALS IN THE ACADEMIC FIELD THAT ARE ASSISTING WITH THE EDUCATIONAL ASPECTS OF THE EVENT BUT THIS WILL BE AS TRUE TO THE ROOTS OF SKATEBOARDING AS POSSIBLE. I WANT FUN AND SKATEBOARDING TO BE NUMBER ONE AND FIRST PRIORITY, SECOND IS THE EDUCATIONAL ASPECTS. OK SO NO BODY BAGS BUT WE WILL TRY TO DO A MOC CRASH IF THE SKATERS THAT TOLD ME THEY WOULD DO IT ARE COMFORTABLE WITH IT, IF NOT WE WILL JUST KEEP TO A DEMO MINUS THE CRASH. PLEASE KEEP THE IDEAS FLOWING MY DIRECTION.

I will be at LS park Saturday around 9am and I will be there for awhile. For the ones that want to skate the closed off event, we will be brainstorming and laying out a demo routine that will be both entertaining and educational for the attending patrons. I may limit the time the skaters have, basically if you want to ride in the event let me know so John F and myself can plan a demo that gives everyone who rides a little moment of skate attention. We have about 6 skaters willing to ride in the event right now, we need more.

Speaking of helmets, I took a fall in the flats Saturday and popped the melon on the crete pretty good. Didn't hurt a bit, thanks to my helmet. I jumped right up and proclaimed "that's why I wear a helmet".

well that was an amazing turn out sat, I spoke with a few of you all about your participation and involvement. believe it or not I was able to gather a lot of information about the kind of impact we can make at this event based on the riding styles, organization, and personal input each of you made. Back to work designing this demo thanks John and Dan for getting some fantastic ideas in motion. I will release more info after our park board meeting Thursday morning.

Hello every one Jim and I spoke yesterday about the unfortunate news of Parks and Rec postponing the Helmet awareness event. I have taken a great deal of time securing the funding, sponsors, and skaters for this event. I am very displeased as to the timing of there postponement, however my focus is on two extremely important factors. 1. the financial side 2. the commitment that each of you have made to assist me in planning for this event. As of first thing this morning I have spoken directly with the hospital that is funding the helmets and they have assured me there sponsorship is still with intention and commitment. As of right now we are trying to lock down another date however this will not be released by me until a printed flier courtesy of the LS parks and rec staff and printing funded by Centerpoint Hospital of Independence Mo. I will keep you posted as soon as we set a date and a meeting at LS parks and rec Gamber center. Thank You Tom 816 820 3066

I want you all to know that each of you have been hand selected by my self and your peers for your ability to consistently ride and do so safely. I have spent over 7200 minutes in the past 3 months on the phone and aprox 7 hours + a day reviewing and collaborating making this event happen. To be honest I'm yes exhausted but I'm also very motivated and feel very fortunate to have each and every one of you apart of Helmets In Hands. please feel free to call or email me regarding any questions, you will notice some new riders added, please feel free to email them and welcome them. Right now this will be the first helmet event that merges bikers, skater and the professional industry together as a collective force. I have received both positive and negative reactions, please know that by becoming involved you are making an effort and a difference and helping save lives. Sense my accident on the 28th of June we have lost 8 skaters from Traumatic Brain Injury. I sincerely thank you all for your involvement and support, see you all soon!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Manual pad and transition area will both have an equal time so value is built on both of these styles and practices of BMX and Skateboarding. Our goal is to help educate in a positive way the need for Skatepark etiquette and wearing a helmet when participating in BMX and Skateboarding. These subjects will be discussed through the demonstration as each style is explained in a way that reaches a variety of age groups. parents of some of the Skaters and Bikers will be there to converse with other riders, parents, and people interested in Skateboarding and Biking. These riders all demonstrate a consistent ability to ride with helmets and with respect to there fellow Skaters, and Bikers.
